Old Story
Twelve years on one surface. The largest work in the practice and its ground bass.
Old Story was begun in 2003 and continued, in returns, until 2015. It is not a painting in the usual sense but a sustained operation, laid down, scraped, added to, scraped again, by a hand returning to the same surface across a span of a life. At 270 by 432 centimeters it cannot be taken in at once. That is part of its meaning. It accumulates the time spent on it the way a body accumulates its years.

Happiness
The series is named against itself. Works made by subtraction nevertheless called Happiness.
Happiness is the central running series, beginning around 2018 and continuing in the studio today. The works arise through scraping, removal, and the laying down of new material over what has been taken away. The title is not ironic. It is a claim about what is left when subtraction has done its work.

2016 – 2019III
City
The pressure of memory becomes cartographic. A dense band of fragments traverses a quiet ground.
City is a smaller body of work in which a place, remembered firmly enough to leave a trace and never named, registers itself across the surface as a band of broken shards over a stilled ground. The works are tightly composed and explicitly horizontal.

Behind the Fence
A wall traverses the lower field. Behind it, color rises in the form of folded triangles.
Behind the Fence is a brief and concentrated series in which the metaphor of confinement and what it cannot contain becomes almost diagrammatic. The wall is plain, the triangles behind it are bright, and the relationship between them is the whole subject.

Untitled
Works that resist their series. Decisions about title held in reserve.
Several works each year are left untitled. They share the methods of the named series but resist its narrative. They are kept untitled when the work asks to be received without a name in front of it.
